Title: Building on MIRACLS: radioactive molecules as novel, sensitive probes for electric dipole moments
Abstract: Molecules in which one or more of its constituting atoms contain a radioactive nucleus represent
unexplored probes for new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Radioactive
atoms provide an additional degree of freedom to synthesise molecular systems with- for instance-
unmatched sensitivity to hitherto undiscovered permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of a
fundamental particle or system. Given the link between EDMs and a violation of the combined
symmetry of charge conjugation and parity (CP), the discovery of an EDM could resolve one of the
most tantalising puzzles in contemporary physics, the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe.
However, methods employed in studies of stable molecules are not directly applicable due to the
rarity and short half-lives of the involved radionuclides. Hence, major experimental advances are
required to harvest from the intriguing discovery potential found in radioactive molecules. By
connecting the successful tradition of collinear laser spectroscopy (CLS) of radionuclides with ion-
trap technology, we have recently developed the Multi Ion Reflection Apparatus for Collinear Laser
Spectroscopy (MIRACLS) at ISOLDE/CERN. While our initial work is focused on highly sensitive
CLS for nuclear structure research, the novel experimental techniques developed within MIRACLS
open unique opportunities for studies of radioactive molecules in fundamental-physics research.
This talk will describe the MIRACLS concept, recent highlights as well as its potential for novel
precision studies with radioactive molecules such as EDM searches.
