Title: Exotic nuclei from the ab initio and shell model perspectives

Abstract: In the next two decades, progress in experimental low-energy nuclear physics will be largely driven by, for example, the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University coming online in 2021. This facility will make it possible to study thousands of new, mostly neutron-rich, isotopes, and to explore the drip lines in the medium-mass region. One of the main challenges for theory will be the development of many-body methods and interactions able to describe weakly bound and unbound nuclei as open quantum systems. However, a scalable framework connecting nuclear forces rooted in quantum chromodynamics to exotic phenomena in drip line nuclei is still lacking. In this talk, I will introduce the density matrix renormalization group method in the Berggren basis, present preliminary results in A=3-5 exotic nuclei, and then motivate the need for new shell model forces based on effective scale arguments to reach medium-mass nuclei with precision.
