Title:     UVic Colloquium - Physicists battling COVID-19: Rapid development of an Emergency Room ventilator - the Mechanical Ventilator Milano

Abstract: During the height of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic an international collaboration of scientists set out to develop a low-cost, easy to operate ventilator, based on readily available parts - the Mechanical Ventilator Milano (MVM). Guided by clinicians and ventilator experts in Italy, the United States, and Canada, and working closely with manufacturers in Italy and Canada, the MVM was developed in record time from the end of March to a Health Canada certification in September 2020. The MVM has been specifically designed to address the needs of COVID-19 patients in intensive care. This talk will summarize the journey of this fast paced project from conception to starting the manufacturing of the 10,000 units that have been ordered by the Government of Canada. It will also show how such a rapid development was made possible by the international collaboration across 9 time zones and discuss some of the differences between developing a physics experiment and a medical device.
