Title: Exploring the continuum with transfer reactions

Abstract: Transfer reactions, in which one or more nucleons are transferred between two nuclear species during a collision, have played an essential role in the experimental exploration of atomic nuclei since the advent of the first particle accelerators. Such an experimental tool will continue to be of paramount importance for the experimental programs here at TRIUMF, as well as in other modern radioactive beam facilities around the world. However, the paradigm has shifted since the early days: from a description of the spectrum in terms of well bound, single particle states, to one in which loosely bound, or even unbound states, hardly amenable to a simple mean field description, need to be addressed. For exotic nuclei close to the neutron drip line, the division between structure and reaction theory becomes blurred, and the use of single-particle states living in static local potentials, normalized by spectroscopic factors, might be ill-advised. In particular, such nuclei exhibit very interesting features above the nucleon emission threshold, in the form of rather narrow resonances. We will introduce in this talk a formalism, at the frontier between structure and reaction nuclear theory, recently developed in order to address these needs, as well as some recent results.
