Title:     Model Coupled Accelerator Tuning

Abstract: The Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) is TRIUMF's radioactive isotope beam production facility, which serves a diversity of high energy nuclear physics experiments through a series of linear post-accelerators. Heavy experimental subscription means the complex task of re-tuning the ISAC accelerators must frequently be undertaken by operators. This entails the careful configuration of the accelerators and beamlines to ensure consistent beam properties for experiment data acquisition. An end-to-end model of the ISAC-I accelerator has been built in the beam envelope code TRANSOPTR. The model is allowed to poll the control system for real-time beam diagnostic input data, including quadrupole scan tomographic re-construction. This enables the running of nearly real-time accelerator beam simulations in parallel to machine operation, which in turn allows for the development of model coupled accelerator tuning software and techniques. These are intended to assist in the re-tuning of the accelerators for beam delivery, the troubleshooting of issues through envelope analysis and also the eventual development of corrective feedback. This implementation is demonstrated on the ISAC-I linear accelerator, TRIUMF's workhorse rare isotope beam postaccelerator.
