Title: Direct Detection of Sub-GeV Dark Matter

Abstract: Uncovering the particle nature of Dark Matter is one of the biggest problems in particle physics today. While searches have traditionally focussed on the Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with masses above 1 GeV, several low-threshold experiments have built sensitivity to the well-motivated parameter space below the GeV-scale. In this seminar, I will focus on the mass range between MeV and GeV and discuss novel detection strategies and challenges in probing this interesting parameter space. In particular, I will talk about low energy backgrounds that several detectors have recently observed and how radiative processes like Cherenkov radiation and Luminescence from electron-hole pair recombination can explain a significant fraction of them in some of the detectors. I will also talk about Migdal effect as a novel detection channel and how it can probe previously unexplored parameter space in current and upcoming experiments.
