Title:     First FLASH protons irradiations in Switzerland at PSI Gantry 1

PSI Gantry 1 treated patients until December 2018. We optimized the beamline parameters to transport the 250 MeV beam extracted from the PSI COMET accelerator to the treatment room, maximizing the transmission of beam intensity to the sample. We characterized the dose monitors on the gantry to ensure good control of the dose, delivered in spot-scanning mode. 
With optimized settings of the beam line, we achieved a transmission of 85% to the sample position (the former treatment position). In FLASH irradiations, we reached a dose rate of 9000 Gy/s at the sample. The clinical dose monitor showed large recombination effects at dose rates higher than 100 Gy/s, which we characterized against dose-rate-independent dose measurements, performed with a Faraday cup, to achieve a 2% dose accuracy in FLASH irradiations. We also performed dose measurements at the maximum dose-rate points in a water phantom using radiochromic films and OSL detectors, to check the shape and distribution of dose fields to be delivered to the samples.
With this setup we have performed a series of irradiations of biological samples in the second half of 2020. We are currently exploring possibilities for irradiations of small animals which requires an upgrade of Gantry 1 to allow for two dimensional scanning.
