Title: Tools to study isotopes and their properties

Abstract: Isotope production simulations and beta-decay studies
The study of radioactive isotopes has uncovered fascinating properties, including shell evolution and shape coexistence. To study these properties we must first have the access to nuclei of interest, whether by isolation or production. The ISOL technique is one such production mechanism, able to generate a plethora of isotopes, and is utilized at TRIUMF in order to study fundamental nuclear properties and to investigate applications of nuclear science. These nuclear properties can be studied using decay modes such as beta-decay at the GRIFFIN facility at TRIUMF, a state-of-the-art spectrometer, capable of observing the radiation emitted from an excited nucleus in order to study its structure. These structure studies are crucial not only to further the knowledge-base of the nuclear chart, but also to provide key inputs to the nuclear shell models that strive to predict properties of hitherto unmeasured isotopes.
In order to tackle isotope production, a GEANT4 simulation of the ISOL technique at TRIUMF was built and benchmarked to predict production rates with TRIUMF targets. The simulation was also used to study the feasibility of using a thorium oxide target for production of isotopes important to nuclear medicine. A summary of the results will be presented.
To probe for nuclear properties, the neutron-rich species 129Sn and 80Ge were studied, through the beta-decay of their parent 129In and 80Ga, respectively. Important properties uncovered during these studies, including a new beta-decay branch in 129In and the non-observation of a 0+2, indicating shape coexistence in 80Ge, will be presented. Future directions in the field of nuclear medicine applications will also be explored.
