Title:     Prospects for Wearable Ventilators for People with Breathing Difficulties

Abstract: The COVID pandemic attracted creative people to the challenges of artificial ventilation, leading to good ideas and new collaborations. Looking beyond COVID, it seems appropriate to build on those efforts, (and the good will of those who participated), by continuing to improve artificial ventilation. In that spirit, an initial collaboration has formed, linking three UBC professors (John Madden, Anoush Poursartip, and Lorne Whitehead) to a novel ventilator group in the UK, known as Exovent. The goal is a soft, wearable device that surrounds a patient's abdomen, undergoing cyclic muscle-like contractions, to emulate how the human diaphragm causes natural breathing. Very preliminary conceptual tests have been encouraging, but much more study is needed, and we seek new contributors to this voluntary effort. Please join us for a discussion of this potential way to help people with breathing difficulties lead more fulfilling lives.

About the speaker. Ian Joesbury has spent most of his career as a senior engineer and manager in the aerospace industry, and now leads the charitable organization Exovent. He will introduce the concepts of negative pressure ventilation. Along with Lorne Whitehead, he will help lead the discussion about possible collaboration opportunities on the Wearable Ventilator concept.
