Title: Model calibration for beta-decay calculations

Abstract: Theoretical predictions for beta-decay rates are important nuclear inputs for the study of nucleosynthesis in the universe, especially the r process which traverses through the neutron-rich
region with no experimental data. Thanks to recent developments of the finite amplitude method,
we are able to perform beta-decay calculations over the whole nuclear landscape within the framework of the Skyrme density functional theory. In this talk I will discuss our recent research on model calibration for beta-decay calculations, which is expected to provide reliable predictions with quantified uncertainty for r-process simulations. The parameters we calibrate include the time-odd isovector Skyrme couplings, isoscalar pairing strength and effective axial-vector coupling constant; they are fitted to selected experimental data of Gamow-Teller resonances and beta-minus-decay half lives. We carry out both chi-square optimizations (frequentist method) and Bayesian model calibrations, and our preliminary results show consistency between the two approaches. In the talk I will discuss the model-calibration procedure we adopt in detail, which can also be effectively employed in other physics problems.
