Title:     The use of Alpha-Transfer Reactions to Unveil the Structure of the Atomic Nuclei

Abstract: The outstanding property of carbon nuclei to behave as a cluster of three alpha particles allows the study of new radioactive species using stable beams and carbon as a target. The pick-up of one of the alpha particles by a stable beam from a thin carbon target allows the population of nuclear states, in long-lifetime radioactive nuclei, that otherwise can be only be produced in radioactive beam facilities.

The so-called alpha-transfer technique has been utilized to study properties like electric and magnetic moments, making outstanding contributions to understanding the evolution of nuclear structure in different mass regions.

To date, the alpha-transfer technique has been implemented, making use of stable beams, opening the opportunity for its implementation in radioactive beam facilities. This colloquium will present an introduction to the use of the alpha-transfer technique and its recent use to obtain information from states in long-lifetime nuclei. Challenges and perspectives for its implementation in radioactive beam facilities will also be mentioned.
