Title: Bulk viscosity and thermal transport in neutron star mergers

Abstract: When two neutron stars merge, the constituent nuclear matter is heated to temperatures of tens of MeV and undergoes dramatic, oscillatory changes in density. In certain regions of the merger, these changes in density can be damped by weak-interaction-driven bulk viscosity on timescales of tens of milliseconds, comparable to the duration of the merger. I will discuss the microscopic weak interactions behind the bulk viscosity as well as the stages of the merger where the bulk viscosity may be most relevant. I will also briefly discuss the role that trapped particles, like neutrinos or particles arising from physics beyond the standard model, can play in thermal transport inside a neutron star merger remnant.
