This seminar talk will introduce the heavy ion storage rings of GSI Darmstadt/ Germany along with their experimental astrophysics program. The focus will be on the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) and a novel experimental approach to measure proton-induced nuclear reactions relevant for explosive nucleosynthesis. This technique is based on the production of radioactive ion beams at GSI, which are subsequently accumulated, cooled and decelerated in the heavy ion storage ring ESR. 

After years of development with stable beams, the first successful measurement has been conducted recently with a radioactive beam, namely $^{118}$Te. The talk will discuss the experimental technique, as well as status and results of the recent and precursor experiments. Furthermore, an outlook to future experiments will be given also involving CRYRING, the new low-energy storage ring at GSI.
