Title: Nuclear symmetries and neutron stars
Abstract: Symmetries and conservation laws lie at the foundation of the physical sciences and manifest themselves throughout the natural world. Within the atomic nucleus, an underlying and striking symmetry exists due to the similarity between neutrons and protons. This fundamental property - described within the formalism of isospin symmetry - is an important predictor of nuclear structure which has proved remarkably accurate since its inception in the early 1930's.
Examples of isospin symmetry are often most clearly observed in the properties of mirror nuclei whose proton and neutron numbers are exchanged. Moreover, nuclei containing similar numbers of neutrons and protons (N~Z) are not only important laboratories for testing nuclear theory but also play a critical role in our understanding of astrophysical phenomena, such as explosive events occurring on the surfaces of accreting neutron stars known as x-ray bursts.
In this talk I will briefly review the concept of isospin symmetry in nuclei and discuss some of its consequences within nuclear physics. I will then describe some examples of experiments that probe isospin, including a recent observation of ground-state mirror-symmetry breaking, and discuss exciting future opportunities to explore isospin symmetry non-conservation.
