Beta decay studies can provide information for multiple applications from fundamental physics to nuclear structure. But studying beta decay is not so simple. It requires the use of complementary techniques to obtain reliable information. Among the used techniques, total absorption spectroscopy is one of few methods available that provide beta decay data free from the systematic error called Pandemonium effect. The technique can also be relevant for practical applications like the determination the reactor antineutrino spectrum in reactors and the decay heat.
In this talk, I will present the total absorption technique, and present examples of measurements performed at IGISOL IV facility of the Univ. of Jyvaskyla of relevance for reactor applications. Particular emphasis will be given to the neutrino spectrum related applications which attracted considerable attention in relation to the so-called antineutrino reactor anomaly.
