Title:     Consequences of charged dust grains in particle accelerators worldwide

Abstract: Dust grains in particle accelerators are believed to be the cause of several detrimental effects such as beam losses, emittance growth, pressure bursts, and even quenches of superconducting cavities and magnets. Such phenomena have been observed in many machines over the years: at TRIUMF this is mainly observed in our superconducting rf beamlines, where micron sized dust particles emit rogue electrons in the presence of the high surface electric field of rf cavities. Despite stringent cleaning and assembly procedures, dust appears to migrate into SRF cavities from elsewhere in the beamline, degrading cavity performance over time. Dust is also currently an important challenge for the safe operation of the LHC, the XFEL and FLASH experiments at DESY, and Super KeKB. In recent years it has come to light that the charge of dust grains may play an important role in their dynamics and the possible failure cases that ensue in cavities and beam lines. Experimental observations suggest that these grains are positively charged in electron storage rings and negatively charged in the Large Hadron Collider. The latest research in the field suggests that accelerator dust and cosmic dust share the same charging mechanisms and behave in very similar ways. Following a new collaboration between CERN and the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics in Colorado, a workshop on dust charging and beam dust interaction was organized in June 2023, bringing together physicists from interdisciplinary fields to share their knowledge on dust related issues. This seminar presents a review of the latest theoretical and experimental developments on dust charging and migration in particle accelerators and space presented at this workshop.
