Title:     Transformative Change in Research Relationships: Addressing Calls to Action Workshop

Abstract: This workshop will discuss proposed and existing changes that have emerged in response from sharing truths of residential schools and legacies of settler colonialism in Canada. Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and local plans for transformative change like the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan have outlined detailed calls and recommendations for both better relationships which can support better and more innovative research exploration and learning opportunities.  

Indigenous peoples have a distinct relationship with scientific research and researchers in Canada. Historically, that research relationship had been primarily extractive and exploitative of Indigenous lands, resources and people and rarely provided benefit back to Indigenous research subjects. Those research relationships have changed and many of those shifts have been motivated by transformative change proposed by Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Canada. Nearly a decade since the end of the TRC in Canada, post-secondary research institutions have revised and reconsidered the integration of Indigenous knowledges and are creating increasingly equitable research plans, based on respect and reciprocity.
