Without the prospect of significantly-increased neutron production at higher energies, progress relies on eliminating or minimizing loss mechanisms. I will discuss recent work exploiting low-temperature superfluid 4He for UCN production and storage at the Institut Laue-Langevin, and comment on the prospects for further progress. While first indications are very promising, we must also improve our ability to address already-observed phenomena that now stand out more clearly with higher UCN statistics. The role of the neutron electric dipole moment in the wider portfolio of precision measurements remains strong, and the tantalizing prospect of entirely new experiments enabled by these advances comes closer.
