Date/Time: Thu Nov 27 2025 at 14:00

Location: Auditorium

Speaker: Vladislav Gerginov (Frequency Electronics, Inc. / NIST)

Title: [Quantum Seminar] Defining the Second with Cesium Fountain Primary Frequency Standards

Abstract: Cesium has long served as a cornerstone of both fundamental physics, metrology and sensing applications. The unit of time (the second) is defined through a fixed number of oscillations of the hyperfine clock transition of the unperturbed Cs atom in the International System of Units (SI). Cesium fountain Primary Frequency Standards have calibrated the local realizations of the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and the International Atomic Time (TAI) for over two decades. I will provide background on the Cs atomic structure and the results of several absolute frequency measurements of optical and hyperfine transitions. I will also present work on the principle of operation, the accuracy evaluation, and the performance of PTB-CSF2 and NIST-F4 Primary Frequency Standards. I will discuss the calibration of the timescales UTC(PTB) and UTC(NIST) using these fountain clocks, and fountain contributions to TAI.
