Room<br/><br/>Speaker: Ferran Boix Pamies (TRIUMF)<br/><br/>Title: Radiation Damage in Materials for High-Power Accelerator Applications<br/><br/>Abstract: High-power accelerator facilities rely on beam-intercepting components, including beam windows, targets, and beam dumps, that are exposed to intense fluxes of energetic particles. Irradiation-induced atomic displacements and transmutation products drive microstructural evolution and alter the properties governing component performance. These processes, collectively referred to as radiation damage, can become a primary factor limiting the operational lifetime of such components. Experimental studies are therefore essential for linking irradiation conditions to microstructural and mechanical evolution, particularly because predictive models remain subject to substantial uncertainty. However, representative accelerator irradiation data are scarce because beam time is limited, relevant exposures may require years of operation, and radioactive materials are challenging to handle and characterize.
To address these limitations, two complementary experimental approaches were implemented at TRIUMF. A secondary irradiation capability was developed and characterized at the ISAC facility to enable controlled materials studies in parallel with routine accelerator operation. In addition, operational components, particularly ISAC beam windows, were recovered and characterized after extended proton beam exposure. Application of these approaches across multiple experimental campaigns has generated new microstructural and mechanical data from both controlled irradiations and long-term operations, supporting the assessment of emerging materials and the lifetime evaluation of components currently used in high-power accelerator facilities.
