Date/Time: Thu Jul 30 2026 at 14:00

Location: Auditorium/ hybrid

Speaker: Julian Auler (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz)

Title: Quantum Seminars: The free neutron lifetime experiment tauSPECT

Abstract: The neutron storage experiment tauSPECT aims to measure the free neutron lifetime, an essential input for precision tests of the Standard Model of particle physics and the Big Bang nucleosynthesis model, by confining ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in a three-dimensional magnetic trap. Unlike material bottles, magnetic storage avoids interactions with hard-to-characterize, absorptive walls, eliminating the associated systematic biases on the measured lifetime.
The magnetic trap is generated using a cylindrical Halbach octupole array of permanent magnets combined with superconducting coils for axial confinement. A spin-flip-based loading scheme is used to fill the trap. After a variable storage period, surviving UCNs are counted in situ using a SiPM-based detector capable of operating in high magnetic fields. In this talk, I will briefly explain why measuring the neutron lifetime matters, provide an overview of the tauSPECT experiment highlighting its most critical components, and share preliminary results from statistical and systematic studies based on extended measurement campaigns at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland.
