We would better understand the lack of antimatter if time-reversal symmetry were violated more strongly than in the Standard Model of particle physics. Experiments that try to measure electric-dipole moments of atoms and molecules (and also of neutrons) are a particularly promising way to discover new time-reversal violation.
The experiments require theory to connect any discovery or limit to the antimatter question. Here, after explaining the link between electric dipole moments and time-reversal symmetry, I discuss the nuclear theory we must do to understand time-reversal violation coming from inside atomic nuclei. I both review prior work and discuss a new initiative to treat nuclear symmetry
violation from first principles. Both the symmetry violation and the large mass of the nuclei used in experiments make such an "ab initio" treatment a challenge, but one we can meet.
