Dear TRIUMF Users, Experimenters, Operators and Staff,
This is to update you on the current situation with ongoing repair in
Beam Line 1A (BL1A), and the impact on Schedule 119b
<https://mis.triumf.ca/schedule/view?schedule=119b&revision=ACTIVE>.
As you know, we had foreseen an extended shutdown period for BL1A, over
the rest of the cyclotron-based program, due to necessary repairs. We
had planned to start beam production August 10, 2011. However, after
uncovering shielding and doing more detailed analysis it was discovered
that more substantial repairs are needed than originally anticipated.
The scope of the repair has been assessed in detail and an in-depth plan
has been put together. With this plan, which requires extended shift
work from the service groups, and help from all TRIUMF divisions, we are
planning and are confident to start beam production for BL1A users
August 19, 2011, with the possibility to provide discretionary beam
potentially earlier (around August 16, 2011).
This is reflected in the online Schedule 119b. We currently assume
operation with a T2 target in place, however we are considering
operation without target (and hence no beam production for M9), as this
would allow operation at much reduced activation of the temporary
shielding and much reduced shielding movement. It would also provide
possible access for the installation of the new muon channels. The
potential benefit of this T2 target-less operation is also a much
reduced scope of the upcoming schedule 120 shutdown and earlier beam
production for Schedule 121. Schedule 121 will at this point be able to
operate with the new muon channels M9 (a/b) and M20. We are assessing
the situation and will inform you if we are making changes, hence opt
for target-less operation.
For Schedule 120, which will run for the Meson Hall-operation from
September 23 to December 23 and for ISAC-operation from October 6 to
December 23, a call for beam requests will go out in the next 2 weeks.
Thank you for your patience.
Sincerely,
Jens Dilling
