 Dear colleagues,

As part of ISOLDE’s improvement program, I’ve been granted funds for a GRAD student (formerly called CERN technical fellow) for three years, with a scheduled starting date between spring and autumn 2026. The student should have a background in Penning traps and not be shy of the hardware aspects, although part of the work involves modelling and simulations. Below I've listed the foreseen tasks.

In case you're aware of a suitable candidate, I would be highly appreciative if you would refer him/her to me.

Best regards,

  Fredrik

Foreseen tasks (somewhat in order of priority):

  1. Be in charge of replicating a complete spare of the internal drift-tube structure of REXTRAP. The work entails removal of existing structure, verification of 3D model wrt reality, transfer of 3D model to production drawings, follow-up of the manufacturing process, assembly and wiring, and finally in-situ testing.

  1. Suggest modifications to the system in order to increase the efficiency, in particular for light ions where the efficiency can be as low as 25%. This may entail changes to differential pumping orifices, higher gas cooling pressure, and even a study on how to apply the rotating wall cooling more efficiently.

  1. Investigate and identify the reason for the occasional discharges occurring inside REXTRAP, that causes beam disturbances and lowers the efficiency of the REX low-energy stage. Thereafter suggest and implement mitigating actions.

  1. Assist the magnet- and cryo-groups with the acceptance tests of a cryo-cooled spare 3 T solenoid for REXTRAP.

  1. Participate in the development at the TwinEBIS test bench, in particular study the effect of high electron-beam neutralization and its effect on the ion production. This work will involve modelling and simulations, most likely in RF-track (in-house CERN code).
