Dear GAPS community,
I’d like to bring the following opportunity to everyone’s attention.
The UBC Faculty of Medicine has been running a short Responsible Conduct of Research course, required for all of their grad students. This year, they have expanded the access, allowing UBC Faculty of Science students to participate on a voluntary basis. I inquired with the organizers and they are also welcoming all TRIUMF resident graduate students.
The course format involves a couple of hours of discussions about scenarios (re: plagiarism, authorship, data manipulation, conflict of interest in research, etc.) and some short modules, all online.
I would like to encourage you all to take advantage of this opportunity. I will forward the registration link at the end of the week.
Best,
Reiner
Dear Science Graduate Programs and Professors,
I am pleased to inform you that the Faculty of Medicine has opened up their Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Course<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgrad-postdoc.med.ubc.ca%2Fcurrent-students%2Fresearch-conduct-course%2F&data=04%7C01%7Creinerk%40triumf.ca%7Cd8de3ce73d9c4e26fbfe08d96ef5bb37%7Cc20535109cb34679a2d38f442e03b587%7C1%7C0%7C637662823955369375%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=yD%2F3NqIdBMgA5fu07GtdO8aIoDsO6oKs4sD9RVHnZI8%3D&reserved=0> to all interested Science graduate students. This free course consists of two short Zoom sessions and an online module, and it covers foundational ideas relevant to all researchers in science including: responsibilities in scientific research, conflicts of interest, authorship, reproducibility, data design and confirmation bias, and responsible data collection and reporting. Unlike many research ethics modules, the RCR Course explores everyday ethical “grey areas” that students will regularly encounter in their research (both as students and later in their careers). Ultimately, the goal is to equip students with an ethical decision-making framework that they can apply to help them navigate such sensitive situations.
Registration is slated to open in early September and a separate email will be sent out at that time to all Science graduate students. Dates for the course for the upcoming year are as follows:
Session I: Tuesday, September 21, 10:00-12:00 and Tuesday, October 5, 10:00-12:00
Session II: Tuesday, February 1, 10:00-12:00 and Tuesday, February 15, 10:00-12:00
Session III: May/June, session dates and times TBD
Please consider encouraging your graduate students to attend this foundational course!
Best,
Heather
