Hello All,

Today's
 Journal club (Wed 7th
 3:30PM MOB theory room
) Mukut will be presenting the attached nature paper.

He has provided a link to very short intro piece (tl;dr version) which
should help lead us in to the paper:
https://www.nature.com/articles/533044a?lang=en

Main paper link:
https://www.nature.com/articles/nature17669

Enjoy.

Here are the points to consider for the discussion.

1/ The measurement relies on Internal conversion of neutral 229mTh.
2/ Steps that are followed->Make 229mTh ion-> Separate 229mTh ion from
other stuff->neutralize on a detector->Make sure detector response is
due to
       229mTh.
3/ How does this help to make a clock ?
4/ What is special about this transition ?
5/ Why has it taken so long to detect this transition ?
6/ The half life changes depending on charge state.
7/ Once the transition is confirmed how is the energy range of this decay
estimated ?
8/ How realistic is a goal of having a nuclear clock in a decade from now ?
