TRIUMF is hosting an ATLAS Masterclass event in a few weeks and needs volunteers! This event lets high schoolers experience what it is like to work in particle physics. The more volunteers they have, the more students that can attend the event! If this interests you, please see the below email and let Isabel know you'd like to volunteer. No ATLAS experience necessary!

Subject: request for volunteers from GAPS to help with an ATLAS masterclass
Hi,
I was wondering if we could put out a request for assistance via the GAPS list?
ATLAS (TRIUMF / UBC / SFU / UVic plus a loose association with some US institutes) is running a “virtual” version of our Masterclass (https://www.triumf.ca/education-and-outreach/atlas-masterclass) on Saturday April 24th from 9 am to 2 pm, for high school students, and to make this work for as many students as possible, we need as many volunteers as possible to help tutor / troubleshoot the groups of high school students in the “analysis” activity portion of the class. The number of students we can accommodate is limited primarily by the number of available helpers.
The analysis they will be doing is simple - it involves learning how to read a simplified ATLAS event display, and identify electrons, photons, muons and jets based on what parts of the detector they interact in, and a very basic understanding of momentum and energy conservation. So you don’t need to be on ATLAS (or even a particle physicist) to help with this - just being a physicist, and enthusiastic about working with (older) kids, is a perfect qualification.
If you are interested (even a little bit!) in participating in this fun outreach event, please contact Isabel (itrigger at triumf.ca<mailto:itrigger at triumf.ca>).
Thanks!
Isabel
