[Triumf-linux-managers] Difference B/N LVM and Extended partitioning.

Hi all,

What exactly is the difference B/N "Extended" and "LVM" partitions. 
Does anyone know?
Is there an advantage of using one over the other?

The question came to me in the process of repartitioning the 80GB disk 
on my laptop while  installing SL4.3 on it.
