FYI
Adobe released an updated Flash plugin for Linux; version 9.
Flash is required to view content on many websites (including TRIUMF
training), and some sites e.g. www.mturk.com require this version.
However, some Flash content crashes the parent browser; sometimes always,
other times on page exit according to some people.
Apparently it works OK with glibc 2.4. But most of us are using 2.3. So,
stick with Flash version 7. If you need version 9 sometimes but other
times can't tolerate a crash, it can be installed in a user profile
instead of the system directory.
If you need Flash 7 and can't find it, I still have a copy

I've been able to reproduce ConvivialDingo's findings. Flash Player appears to be glibc version
specific? Adobe really dropped the ball on this one! Not only did they not test versions prior to 2.3
(still used by several distributions), but they failed to note the dependency on their documentation!
