Title: Beta-detected NMR and its applications in condensed matter physics

Abstract: In the Beta-detected NMR experiments performed at the ISAC facility at TRIUMF, a beam of highly longitudinally spin polarized radioactive 8Li+ nuclei with kinetic energy up to 30 keV is directed onto the sample held in ultra-high vacuum. At this energy the 8Li+ stops within approximately 4000 Angstroms of the surface. The time evolution of the spin polarization is measured through the anisotropic beta decay of the 8Li nuclei. Beta-NMR requires 10-12 orders of magnitude fewer spins than conventional NMR technique. This makes the method well suited to studies of dilute impurities, small structures or interfaces where fewer nuclear spins are found.

In this talk I will present recent results from the superconducting vortex state on the surface of NbSe2 single crystal, and from Fe/Ag thin magnetic multilayers.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
