Title:     Charge state breeding of radioactive ions

Abstract: For the efficient acceleration of heavy ions high charge states are essential. However, at an ISOL facility in the vicinity of a hot production target the operation of high charge state ion sources is not possible and radioactive ions are predominantly produced as singly charged ones. The stripping of these ions in a foil after a first acceleration to some 100 keV/u works well only for ions up to a mass of about 30. For higher masses two concepts have been realized so far. It is the charge state breeding in an EBIS and an ECR. The potentials of both sources will be introduced and recent results from REX-ISOLDE and ISAC will be presented.
