Title: Beta-Neutrino Correlation Measurements with Trapped Radioactive Nuclei
Abstract: Radioactive isotopes held in atom traps and ion traps are allowing a new generation of precision beta decay studies to be conducted. Measurements of the angular correlation between the emitted beta particle and neutrino yield information about the structure of the weak interaction. Since the neutrino is exceedingly difficult to detect, the correlation must be inferred from the recoil of the daughter nucleus. Traps provide a "backing-free" source so the low-energy recoil ion spectra can be measured free of systematic effects such as scattering. I will discuss the current status of experiments with trapped 21Na atoms at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the development of an RFQ ion trap at Argonne National Laboratory for beta-decay studies.
This is an applicant for TRIUMF Research Scientist Position.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
