Title: TACTIC Time Projection Chamber
Abstract: The concept of the TRIUMF Annular Chamber for the Tracking and Identification of Charged particles (TACTIC) will be presented in this talk. TACTIC allows the three-dimensional reconstruction of heavy-ion tracks by means of a two-dimensional anode array combined with a TOF measurement of the drift electrons. The geometry of TACTIC covers a large angular range permitting the measurement of differential cross-sections over a large solid angle. The chamber will be small (diameter ≈ 10 cm, length ≈ 20 cm) and operated at sub-atmospherical pressure. It will be ideal for investigations of nuclear processes pertinent to the field of nuclear astrophysics. TACTIC is useful in particular for experiments on gas targets with low-energy ejectiles that cannot penetrate a gas cell window, or for experiments with a high number of background particles that can’t be separated by conventional methods.
The first planned experiment is the measurement of the 8Li(α,n)11B reaction, which can serve as an indicator for the nucleosynthesis of higher elements in the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis as well as one starting point of the r-process to bridge the mass-8 gap. Other planned experiments are to measure the proton elastic scattering length on Be which can be used to pin down the S17(0) value of the 7Be(p,γ)8B reaction, and 12C+12C which plays an important role in many stellar environments.
Please bring your own lunch.
