Title: Casting Light on Antimatter: Fundamental Physics with Cold Antihydrogen

Abstract: Testing fundamental symmetries plays an important role in our understanding of Nature. Experiments at Antiproton Decelerator facility at CERN aim to make precision tests of symmetry between matter and antimatter, by comparing the properties of atomic hydrogen with those of its antimatter counterpart, antihydrogen.

After several years of development with the ATHENA experiment, we have achieved our first goal: production of antihydrogen at low velocity, and in large quantities. These first cold anti-atoms, however, were not confined, but in order to perform precision measurements, their stable trapping is essential. This is the main goal of our new experiment Project ALPHA (Antihydrogen Laser Physics Apparatus). In this talk, I will review ATHENA’s success and the subsequent progress, together with the prospects of a major Canadian initiative in an emerging field of cold antimatter studies.
