Title: Coherence and Decoherence in the Decay of Superdeformed Nuclei
Abstract: The existence of high-spin superdeformed states is one of the most striking verifications of the nuclear shell model. Nevertheless, the physics for decay out of these states into normal-deformed bands remains a topic of intense debate. Using a Dyson's Equation approach, I'll show that a simple two-level model (Stafford & Barrett PRC 60, 51305) captures all the essential physics, and moreover results in a straightforward, intuitive understanding of the problem. The decay-out is then seen to be a competition between the decoherent E1 and E2 processes which cause decay within each rotational band, as mediated by coherent Rabi oscillations between the two deformations. Furthermore, the two-level model explains the surprising universality of decay-out profiles in the "classic" 190 mass region.
Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
