Title: Nuclear Astrophysics and Nucleosynthesis: A Synthesis of Experimental Techniques

Abstract: Nuclear astrophysics is a field requiring a successful synthesis between observation, theory and nuclear experiment. Observables from astronomical events such as novae, supernovae and X-ray bursters reach us in the forms of radiation, such as 511 keV annihilation lines, soft x-rays, and gamma-ray lines arising from nuclear decays and transitions. These observables provide the means by which to measure the energy output from such events and the nucleosynthesis processes occurring therein. Coupled directly to these observations are the nuclear physics processes that give rise to the production of these observable radioactive nuclides. These nuclear processes are functions of cross sections, nuclear masses and half lives of the participating nuclides. Experimental nuclear astrophysics, then, is a field employing a snynthesis of multiple experimental techniques: direct reaction experiments, indirect reactions, beta-decay experiments and mass measurements. In my talk I will touch on these techniques through a summary of my past and present work and through a discussion on experimental ideas to perform at ISACI/II using DRAGON, EMMA, and the doppler attenuation station. The presentation will conclude with an offerening to the community of my ideas on astrophysically relevant measurements that can be performed employing novel cryogenic detectors I have been researching at RIKEN.

The speaker is a candidate for a research scientist position in experimental nuclear astrophysics. Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
