Title: Low Density Neutron Rich Matter
Abstract: Neutron rich nuclear matter is important for neutron stars, for explosive events such as supernovae and gamma ray bursts, and for the synthesis of the chemical elements. Improved X-ray, neutrino, and gravitational wave detectors promise exciting new results. In the laboratory, neutron rich matter can be studied in heavy ion collisions, radioactive beam experiments, and via weak interactions. We describe low density neutron rich matter using an exact virial expansion and compare it to the nearly universal behavior of cold atoms in laboratory traps. Next, the complex nuclear pasta phases expected at intermediate densities, and the low density solid phase are modeled via molecular dynamics simulations. We predict neutrino interactions in supernovae, describe the crust of accreting neutron stars, and discuss several related experiments.
The speaker is a candidate for a research scientist position in the theory group. Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
