Date/Time: Tue 2009-06-30 at 14:00

Location: Auditorium

Speaker: Francesco Cappuzzello (INFN-LNS and University of Catania)

Title: First experiments with the MAGNEX spectrometer at the INFN-LNS laboratory: a new door opened towards the mysteries of nuclear physics

Abstract: The MAGNEX spectrometer will be briefly introduced and its peculirities discussed. The large acceptance of this device as regards the spanned solid angle and range of momenta, together with the high resolution achieved in the measurement of the ions energy and scattering angle will be connected with the opportunities thus opened in the field of modern nuclear physics. The possibility to couple MAGNEX with present and future facilities of radioactive ion beams, thus creating a unique powerful tool for the investigation of exotic nuclei, will also be considered. In the second part of the seminar the results of the first experiments will be presented, showing new striking discoveries like the observation of the Giant Pairing Vibrations in atomic nuclei by two neutron transfer reactions, or the excitation of Gamow Teller and other isospin modes in charge exchange experiments.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
