Title:     Developments in Nuclear Theory for Double Beta Decay

Abstract: After reviewing the significance of double beta decay and the nuclear matrix elements that govern it, I will discuss recent developments in nuclear theory aimed at reducing the uncertainty in those matrix elements.
I will focus in particular on techniques to derive an effective nuclear double-beta-decay operator for use in the shell model.
