Title: Muon Capture Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Properties
Abstract: We examine the constraints that muon capture and radiative muon capture impose on sterile neutrino properties. In particular, we consider a sterile neutrino with a mass between $40$ to $80~{\rm MeV}$ that decays predominantly into a photon and light neutrinos due to a large transition magnetic moment that could offer a resolution of the results of the LSND, KARMEN, and MiniBooNE experiments. We find that this scenario is ruled out by measurements of the radiative muon capture rate using the RMC Spectrometer at TRIUMF by nearly an order of magnitude. Furthermore, a large transition magnetic moment could allow sterile neutrinos to be produced by neutrino beams electromagnetically scattering. We also examine the constraints that could be placed on sterile neutrinos in future $\mu\to e$ conversion experiments.
