Title: GEANT4 for accelerators and beam lines
Abstract: In last week's seminar Peter Gumplinger gave a wide-ranging introduction to the Geant4 simulation toolkit. This week I will give an overview of the uses of Geant4 in studying accelerators and beam lines. The keys to Geant4's usefulness are its object-oriented (C++) architecture and its ability to track particles accurately in electric and magnetic fields, in a detailed 3D geometry with particle interactions in matter included.
After reviewing some of the beam physics applications for Geant4, and some software tools that have been developed, I will describe a prototype model of TRIUMF Beamline 2A which has been constructed using a remarkable program called G4Beamline. Built on top of Geant4, G4Beamline
offers a complete simulation environment without the need to learn or use C++. Even with G4Beamline, it is a challenge to put together a realistic, predictive model of a beam line, with meaningful tuning parameters. I will discuss this process, some possible ways to improve it, and the potential for further applications of G4Beamline at TRIUMF.
