Title: 2011 DNP Thesis Prize Seminar - Detection of Trapped Antihydrogen in ALPHA

Abstract: The ALPHA experiment has recently achieved magnetic confinement of antihydrogen atoms for times as long as 1000 seconds. Extended confinement is an important milestone in the effort to perform high-precision spectroscopy, which will enable the comparison between the hydrogen and antihydrogen atomic spectra. For ALPHA, the demonstration of the trapping of antihydrogen relies crucially on the annihilation reconstruction provided by a silicon vertexing detector. This talk will describe the ALPHA apparatus and detector, with an emphasis on the methods used to confirm the presence of trapped antihydrogen.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
