Date/Time: Mon 2012-01-30 at 10:00

Location: NRC Building, Rm1310

Speaker: Ken Carter (University Radioactive Ion Beam Consortium)

Title: Oak Ridge Isomer Spectrometer and Separator

Abstract: The UNIRIB (University Radioactive Ion Beam) Consortium carries out decay studies on nuclei far from stability. Many of these studies are severely hampered, if not completely overwhelmed, by isobaric contamination. To enhance our decay studies, the UNIRIB Consortium undertook the development of a technique capable of separating any isobar from another. While a number of techniques exist – laser ionization, molecular beams, etc – they all are dependent on the chemistry of the constituents. We chose to develop a high resolution separator, based on time-of-flight, which is dependent solely on the mass of the constituents, making it truly universal. The original design goal was M / dM ~ 40,000 which would enable almost complete purification of any isobar. In offline mode we have demonstrated a mass resolution of 400,000 for mass 32 ions and > 150,000 for mass 28 and mass 132. At 400,000 not only will we be able to separate any isobar but many isomers.

The current status of ORISS will be described with a short description of the ion optics, the hardware and software and current results and problems. Simulations of the expected performance in both spectrometer mode and separator mode will be discussed as well as its use as an isomer scope. The plan for final testing and completing of ORISS will be presented.

Stimulants available 15 minutes before the talk.
