Title: New insights on the physics of SRF niobium cavities microwave surface resistance

Abstract: Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) is a key enabling technology for essentially all new high energy and high beam power accelerators envisioned worldwide. Applications of SRF particle accelerators range from scientific, medical, defense, homeland security and industrial. Decades of effort in SRF R&D in laboratories and universities have enabled niobium cavities to perform reliably up to gradients ~ 40 MV/m and with large quality factors. However, SRF niobium cavities still suffer of a decreased efficiency with the increasing RF accelerating voltage. Understanding the cause behind the field dependent RF losses is key to push the SRF cavities performance even further, and significantly reduce costs for current and future accelerating machines worldwide. In this talk we will present studies conducted at Fermilab which have lead to significant steps forward towards the understanding and overcoming of SRF cavity losses.
