Title: Structure Models for Nuclear Masses and Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay

Abstract: The pairing contribution to the odd-even oscillations in the nuclear binding energies is considered in the framework on the nuclear shell model. Schematic and realistic Hamiltonians are used to understand the trends related to pairing and shell gaps. Detailed results are shown for the neutron-rich calcium isotopes.

Observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay will show that the neutrinos are Majorana type fermions and determine their absolute mass scale. I will discuss calculations for the nuclear matrix elements that must be used for the interpretation of these experiments, and show how they are connected to the pairing properties of the Hamiltonian and the nuclear masses.

Refreshments 15 minutes before the talk.
