Title: Electroweak Quasi-Elastic Scattering from Nuclei

Abstract: The neutrino-nucleus charge changing quasi-elastic (CCQE) scattering plays an important role in many neutrino oscillation experiments. The CCQE process allows determination of the incident neutrino flavor and is assumed to provide a determination of the incident neutrino energy, both essential elements in establishing the neutrino oscillation parameters. Overly simple nuclear models neglecting nucleon-nucleon interactions and their resulting nucleon-nucleon correlations seriously under predict the yield of neutrino-nucleus CCQE scattering and are unreliable in assigning the incident neutrino energy. Ambitious future experiments seek to measure CP violating phase via differences in neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. As neutrino and antineutrino CCQE interactions differ a far more quantitative treatment of their interaction with nuclei will likely be required. This talk will demonstrate the necessity of going well beyond treating the nucleus as a Fermi Gas. It will also show that very considerable progress has and is being made in treating the underlying physics of electroweak quasi-elastic scattering and that experiments continue to support these important advances.
