Title: Measurements of low lying resonances in 11Li and 10Li with the IRIS Facility
Abstract: Nuclei with large neutron to proton ratio exhibit unusual properties, such as 11Li being a Borromean halo nucleus. Borromean nuclei are three-body systems with unbound pairwise constituents. In the case of 11Li, which can be construed as a three-body system of 9Li+n+n, the two-body constituents 9Li+n (10Li) and n+n are unbound. The unbound system 10Li is of great interest for the description of the structure of 11Li. In addition, the exotic two-neutron halo of 11Li opens the possibility of unusual excitation modes such as the soft dipole resonance that was predicted two decades ago. Experiments havent established the existence of such a resonance in 11Li. This resonance can be studied through the d(11Li,d')11Li inelastic reaction. While the majority of measurements have indicated possible resonances in 10Li, it is still not well established which resonance contributes to the ground state configuration of 11Li and by what spectroscopic factor. To obtain such information a decisive way can be investigating the transfer of one-neutron from 11Li. No transfer reaction experiment has been done so far which directly looks at the sub-component 10Li within 11Li. The measurements of low lying resonances in both 11Li and 10Li were performed using a solid H2 target at the newly constructed IRIS facility at TRIUMF. I will describe the IRIS Facility and show first results from IRIS where new evidence of the 11Li dipole resonance has been firmly observed. I will report observations on 10Li studied through the p(11Li,d) one-neutron transfer reaction at beam energy of 6A MeV.
