Title: Rydberg excitation of cold trapped ions for quantum computing

Abstract: Cold trapped ions in radiofrequency ion traps are among the most promising physical systems for quantum information processing [1]. In this talk, I will introduce Rydberg ions as a new platform for such experiments. Rydberg ions offer the unique opportunity for combining the advantages of cold Rydberg atoms and their long-range dipolar interactions with high controllability that can be achieved in trapped-ion qubits [2]. The Mainz group has pioneered the experimental work on these systems, which will be discussed in the talk [3]. I will briefly discuss the application of Rydberg trapped ions for quantum technology experiments [4,5], and will mainly focus on a new proposal for fast entangling operations that use fast electric pulses applied on trapped ions in Rydberg states [6].
