Title:     IsoSiM Student Seminar: "Studying nanoscale Li diffusion in rutile TiO2 using the β- and α-decay of 8Li"

Abstract: In the battle against climate change, energy storage is a key component, with Lithium-ion batteries playing a crucial role, as they are considered the best available option.

Despite their large success, conventional Li-ion batteries posses a number of disadvantages, including low energy density, high cost and relatively fast aging. These ultimately relate to the motion of Li+ interstitials in such materials: How fast Li+ diffuses, how easy it is to insert Li in their bulk and what happens to lithium as it diffuses to the interfaces of such materials. Does it get stuck, reflected or transmitted?

We studied one candidate anode material (rutile TiO2) at TRIUMF, using both the beta and the subsequent alpha decay of 8Li. From each decay we got very different information regarding the 8Li motion that greatly contributed towards better understanding Li diffusion in rutile.
