Title: Polarized nuclei and neutrons: toward new tools for fundamental physics

Abstract: Experimental searches for permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs)
test the Standard Model at high precision, provide diagnostic power for new
sources of CP violation, and connect deeply to the symmetry-breaking
mechanisms required for baryogenesis. Polarized spins are an experimental
workhorse in EDM searches, in which the frontiers of statistical sensitivity
are set by state-of-the-art production and sensing techniques. In particular
the achievable densities of ultracold neutrons (UCN), and of polarized
atomic spins, substantially determine the ultimate physics reach of the EDM
experiments that employ them. Lossless spin-manipulation and high-fidelity
detection of spin-polarization are then critical to ensure that real
measurements can take full advantage of these resources. Closely related
precision measurements, e.g. involving the free neutron lifetime or spin
clock comparisons, are driven by the same technological advances; these
techniques also presently provide some of the best characterizations of
specialized experimental systems such as low-magnetic-field environments and
ultrapure liquid helium mixtures. I will discuss current work in
commissioning the new high-density UCN source SuperSUN at the ILL, prospects
for first science results from its first user experiment PanEDM, and ideas
for new sources and magnetometers that will enable future generations of
improved experiments.
